Facebook has added beacon functionality to its platform with Place Tips, a system that allows businesses to send information to Facebook users in the vicinity.

Designed to fit unobtrusively within the existing Facebook framework, Place Tips will show location-based information at the top of news feeds, displaying information, reviews, updates and events for participating businesses and organisations.

The system will be tested in New York, incorporating notable areas such as Central Park, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, as well as well-known companies including the Dominique Ansel Bakery, Le Parker Meridien Hotel and the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop.

GPS and wifi signals will be used to target relevant Facebook users, although the technology giant has stressed that user locations will remain private when using the software. The software will initially not be offered as an advertising platform, although this is liable to change once the project reaches scale.
